This yearlong, high school English course required for all sophomores provides students with introductory material in preparing and presenting formal and informal speeches. Based on the Common Core Standards, students receive one quarter of work in learning about the fundamentals of public speaking and one quarter of work presenting speeches. Students will learn to find information, organize it, and present it appropriately to an audience.
Students also receive one semester of writing and literature. In literature, students will read and analyze short stories, plays, poetry, nonficiton, and novels. Students also write about literature, and they will learn to organize, write, and edit argumentative, synthesis, and rhetorical analysis essays using correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics.
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to adequately make a presentation to an audience, analyze literature, and write compositions.
